Parents of gender diverse children are shocked and disgusted that our children's rates of bullying and suicide are being used as budget props for the Minnesota Department of Education's School Safety and Technical Assistance Center. MN Education Commissioner Cassellius doesn't get to talk about our students' pain if she is not going to address their suffering.
The MSS shows that when gender diverse students are compared to their cisgender peers, they are:
- 3 times more likely to engage in self-harm, with more than 50% reporting they purposely hurt themselves within the previous 12 months
- 3 times more likely to have “seriously considered attempting suicide”
- 5 times more likely to have attempted suicide, 38% vs 6% in 9th grade, 37% vs 8% in 11th grade
Quick snapshot of the treatment of students who are transgender across the country.
"Every transgender person is part of someone's family and should be treated with compassion and protected from discrimination..." Ms. Ros-Lehtinen
It should feel urgent to every parent, even if they don't know a transgender child, to immediately end the hostility towards people who are transgender and gender nonconforming.
Things are moving quickly! Expect big changes in the coming years!!!
“Schools want to do right by all of their students and have looked to us to provide clarity on steps they can take to ensure that every student is comfortable at their school, is in an environment free of discrimination, and has an opportunity to thrive,”
